How To

Tea Lights: Using Fresh Apples and Oranges

I like using fruits and vegetables in my centerpieces. For these tealight holders, purchase a selection of oranges and apples from your local grocery store. I bought red delicious apples and tangelos, but you can use whatever variety appeals to you and looks good at your store. You need at least 9 total for your buffet table, but you may want to make extra for your bar, chocolate fondue table or to place throughout your home.

Step 1 - The Materials

First, wash and dry your fruit. Trace the bottom of your tealight onto your apples and oranges. You want your tealight to sit straight, so eyeball how your fruit sits flat before choosing the spot to draw. For instance, I did my tangelos on their sides.

Step 2 - Hollowed Out

Using a knife (I prefer a pumpkin carving knife) carve out the circle. Be careful not to cut too big at first because you don't want large gaps around the edge of the tealight. Cut deep enough for your tealight to sit flush with the opening. I used a spoon to go down in and scoop more out. Preferably, prepare the morning of your party so they stay fresh looking. Once you get the hang of it - it goes quickly!
